I've never been a fan of still life art. I admire the technical ability but feel its relevance is minimal today, that it once was/had a point but that time is long gone. The technique in this piece is niceandthe colours right, but the lack of context makes it tedious, for me. Does anyone really want to look attractive pair of trainers on the wall? Perhaps some do...

I can see where you're coming from completely. I think still life isn't as relevant today, due to it being fairly static and emotionless. That being said, for me painting still life's are a way to practice technique and I enjoy it doing it. I don't doubt that give it a couple of months I'll paint over them with more portraiture work, but it's all part of the process to develop and get to grips with oils.
