Time for another philosophical question for the masses...
Framing is f'ing expensive. Obviously I'm not going to scrimp on the glass, and even a double or decorative matting doesn't add that much, but what's your take on the frame itself? Are you spending the extra gobs of money for something decorative or unique, or just content to get something that looks proportionate and reasonable with the piece (and its surroundings on the wall)?
It's probably different across the pond, but what are you paying overall? I just dropped off my Eelus - ATR and it'll be almost $600. Average framing job for my collection is probably $250.
Having so many framed pieces, I'm struggling with the feeling that I should do something less traditional than black/white matting with black/white core and some type of black frame. And my art budget is struggling with the fact that framing costs as much as the art.

I use a plain black 3/4" wide, 1 1/4" deep frame on EVERYTHING. It is quite affordable and gives everything a more cohesive look around the house.

I went through the same process a long time ago in that all of my frames were black box and like you i got bored. I began to take liberties with framing maybe 7 or 8 years ago and have found i really enjoy the process and much prefer the look on the wall. I enjoyed it so much that I re-framed most of my former black box collection. It gives each piece its own character but it does come at a steep price. Certainly not for everyone and like jazz, things can come out bad at times so you have to prepare yourself for a re-frame which adds to the cost. But, when it all comes together, it adds another layer of appreciation.

Your framer may lend you a copy of his moulding catalogue, most catalogues have 1000s of sample whereas framers usually display 100 or so, as lee3 said it can de pricier because the framer will likely have more wastage using something they dont stock ie a 50x70 mounted print will go into the 2nd 10ft length and there will be 6-7ft left over which will be factored in but the process of finding the perfect frame for the piece is good fun, most suppliers will send out free 12" samples so you can see it in real life before deciding.

I am in the process of re-framing a lot of my stuff. Basically everything I know I will keep. The rest will be sold. Vast majority will be in white box frames with Museum or non reflective glass. This will be one expensive exercise.

I'm not sure how people feel about chain stores for framing, I use both mom and pop shops and chains such as Aaron Brothers, a lot comes down to price in relation to the piece.
Regardless, Aaron Brothers does have the setup where they take a picture of your print and upload it to a computer, from here you can mix and match throughout their entire frame and matte collections so you can really try unique (crazy) things and get a feel how they look instantly .

I get all my framing done at a Michael's, but I know the guy that does it really well and he is always top notch...saves me a lot of money too (same materials as a more expensive framer such as ROOQ or whatnot in the city). As for frames, I do enjoy a basic gallery frame as it does not take away from the image and I try to keep the apartment cohesive with plain black/white frames. I guess it all depends on your taste and where the piece will hang...also on your pockets

I have my stuff now done by a guy who doesn't have a "shop" only a workshop - down in south west london. He does a lot of stuff for the royal opera house and a few galleries as well. he's a cool.. down to earth bloke - doesn't charge the earth - takes his time (due to massive backlog).. and will spend a while chatting about what he's seen who he's met and what he thinks.... about what you've brought in

After trying a variety of framers, including some well known ones, I was never happy.
Corners were a bit off, float mounted prints askew, hinging apparent, not to mention one ruined Invasion kit, a dyptic where one frame is 3mm smaller than the other, wrong mount colours etc etc etc and all this by some highly advertised framers on our forums.
And then someone suggested Pauli, and I never changed back. His framing is meticulous, he has some great stuff in his workshops from upcoming shows, he loves the urban scene and is great to chat with.
His prices are not cheap, but still more reasonnable than say JJ in London.

I have no beef with JJ by the way, just saying they are more expensive than what I pay for what I consider excellent framing.

Is indeed expensive.... but really it's an extension of the art itself; so I feel it's worth the cost.
I usually get my shit done at Aaron Brothers'. The fact that they digitally photo your art and give you a glimpse of the outcome really lets a person enjoy the experience, because you have say in the matter.... from mats, to frame style and color combinations. If you don't like what they're recommending, just say so. There isn't always a need for double or triple mats or any mat at that, and it cuts down the price.
I pay $200-$230 (tax included)... that's my budget... and I usually put some cool stuff together.
I'm signed up to receive newsletters from Aaron Bros. So when I see the 50% off custom frames... I'll be there the next day.
(*tRiCk ) If you don't want to sign up and wait for a sale: head to their site, hover over Frames > Customs frames > Click on Customs Frames body section> and click right until you get to the last picture, where it asks "Ready to Frame?" > slightly underneath you'll see a click here for coupon, and will give you a 50% off custom frame.

Good morning guys, after advice on framing. I bought this Otto Schade 1/1 print for my little boys room, he's only 5 months old but just had orders to start decorating and move him into his own room which will be great to get our sex life back on track anyway I am not sure what to run with as I like to float my prints. It will be on a white wall maybe natural timber thin frame with white background? anyone seen one of these framed anywhere? AZA you produced that lovely mock up for the miaz brothers release, is there a software I can have a crack at?

Some websites offer this function, but the frame selection is pretty limited. I did my mock up with photoshop. If you can find a frame you like, I'll happily do it for you
