I have been messing around with paints and canvas for a good while now. I do a bit of stuff with acrylic and spray paint. But I have just recently started working with designing and cutting stencils. Thanks to the great advice from a bunch of forum members and some amazing help from sɐǝpı ɟo uoıʇɐɹǝpǝɟ and Aza I recently started and finished my first complete stencil. I can say thank you enough to Aza for all the tips, tricks, and positive energy. He's been great about answering my questions and helping me keep my direction. This is an image of a friend of mine, she had it taken a few years ago for a model shoot and I've always hung onto it, wanting to do something with it eventually. I came up with an eight layer stencil, ranging from black-through grey-down to white. The canvas is 22x28 (56x71cm). I had to print out each stencil onto nine separate sheets of paper and then piece them back together on a larger thin poster board, so I could keep the rigidity I was looking for. It took me about two straight weeks of cutting to get through them all. Let me know what you think. I will post some progress shots a little later on.

really nice job. keep 'em coming! my only advice would be to try to get rid of some of that "live trace" feel. personally, I'd prefer less color/shades if that meant keeping it from having that certain look. I prefer the old school (think Blek) over the newer style (think Whatson) but still certainly took tons of skill to make it, and a lot of people prefer that newer look. look forward to the next one!

Your right Fed, I was thinking the same thing, but by that time I was already halfway into it. Really had to get into it before I knew what questions to ask and what to look for. The next one I'll come at from another direction. Always learning.

Always learning. it already looks better than any stencil I've ever done, so you're certainly doing something right have you tried the Montana transparent paints? they just issued a bunch of new tones (more than 10 I think)... might be worth a shot for shading. I've always guessed Banksy must use transparent black for a lot of his newer stencils
