Carne Griffiths

Working primarily with calligraphy inks, graphite and liquids, such as tea, brandy and vodka Griffiths’ fascination with drawing focuses on the creation and manipulation of the drawn line. Images explore human, geometric and floral forms, in a combination of both literal and abstract translation and in response to images and situations encountered in daily life. Images are recorded in a dreamlike sense onto the page where physical boundaries are unimportant. His work creates a journey of escapism which focuses on scenes of awe and wonder, projecting a sense of abandonment and inviting the viewer to share and explore this inner realm.

Originally from Liverpool, Griffiths graduated from the Kent Institute of Art and Design in Maidstone in 1995. After completing a one-year KIAD fellowship and moving to London he served an apprenticeship at the longest-established gold wire embroidery firm in the world. Here he worked as a gold wire embroidery designer for twelve years, eventually becoming the creative director. Carne produced intricate designs for the military and the film, theatre, fashion and advertising industries. His designs were used for the uniforms in the films Valkyrie, The Last King of Scotland, and in particular his ‘Red Death Coat’ was used in The Phantom of the Opera. Carne’s elaborate floral designs for Asprey were included in their first ever catwalk collection and his work was featured on the embroidered cover of the 80th Royal Variety Performance programme in 2008.

Since establishing his own studio in 2010, Carne has exhibited in the UK and overseas with wok shown at the London Original Print Fair, the Royal Academy, Stroke Art Fair, Afforadble art fair, the London Art Fair and with solo Exhibitions in Brighton, Hong Kong, Milan and an upcoming show in Hamburg. Carne’s illustration work has seen him collaborate with the British photographer Rankin for a 6 page feature in Hunger magazine as well as featuring in publications worldwide, notably for several covers of the New York Observer, English Heritage magazine and for Brand projects including work for Microsoft, Derwent, Peroni, Lakes Distiller and Ibis Hotels.

Handiedan
Dutch artist Handiedan‘s artistic universe revolves around some leading visual motifs and yet it amazes thanks to its complexity, both in terms of formal composition and in terms of the collage technique she uses for making them. These two aspects together determine the irresistible charm of her art.

Undisputed protagonists of Handiedan‘s sculptural digital and hand-cut collages, her artwork immediately recall the burlesque genre, with the female subject looks like something in between an orientally adorned femme fatale from a noir film, a sexually joyful pin-up from a 1950’s calendar and a tattooed rockabilly gal. However if we look into them further many sources of inspiration are revealed: the Neo-Classical and Victorian ages, the Parisian Belle Époque, up to the 1940’s and Post-War sexy imagery.

The background is as much intriguing as the feminine creatures emerging from it. Filled with elegantly decorative motifs, patterns and hidden meanings, the ornamental backgrounds are composed out of imagery like antique currencies, vintage sheet music, postage stamps and old playing cards.

The work is completed by Handiedan’s own drawings and pen doodle character, called ‘Amélie, marking both the background and the body parts of the pin-ups.
Mounted into antique ornamented frames, the works are finally ready in all their exuberant liveliness.

Each artwork is digitally composed through by assembling pre-existing images, followed by a complex hand cut paper layering process. With the combination of both digital and hand cut collage, Handiedan not only gives her artwork a three-dimensional quality in technique, but also gives her design a kaleidoscopical multi-dimentional quality in subject matter.

Handiedan’s art works as a treasure trove of symbols and patterns scattered on the background and in tattoos in form of decorative symbolism and hidden meanings, with a focus on Quantum Physics, Metaphysics, Mythology, Sacred Geometries, Cosmology, Astronomy and Space and Time theories.

With a background in photographic design (graduated), illustration and graphic design (self taught), Handiedan started working as a mixed media collage artist in 2007.
Her artwork has been shown throughout the world including her sold-out solo shows at Roq la Rue and Thinkspace Gallery, and shows & fairs at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Spoke Art/Hashimoto Contemporary, Scope and Project Miami, Phone Booth Gallery and Black Book Gallery in the US, Saatchi and Unit44 in the UK, Kallenbach Gallery in Amsterdam, Mondo Bizzarro Gallery in Rome and Museum La Halle St. Pierre in Paris.

Mural projects like RMP in Richmond, ‘Wall\Therapy’ in Rochester NY, ‘One Wall’ with Urban Nation in Berlin and ‘White Walls’ with Unit44 in Newcastle.
Her art has been featured in several books, magazines and blogs including Victionary, Die Gestalten Verlag, HEY!, BISPublishers, Delayed Gratification, IdN Magazine, NowThen, Monday Inspiration, DPI, Fefe, HiFructose and Juxtapox.
